Autumn Has Arrived

With Autumn comes the display of color among the leaves of the many varieties of trees.  And just as the trees shed their leaves, so do rabbits shed their fur.  Such has been the case of our 18 month old Mini-Lop, Bincy bunny.  In fact, one morning this month we woke up to find a very large area of Bincy's fur mysteriously missing.  We figured it was caused by shedding although we could find no evidence of where the fur had gone.  We thought maybe Bincy had pulled out all the hair because of a spider bite or maybe even mites (although we could not see any).  So to be safe it was a trip to our rabbit-savvy vet for a check up.

Sure enough, Bincy was shedding.  So there has been a lot of rabbit brushing going on around the Mid-South Bunny Museum of late.  Can you imagine what it is like to have an Angora as a house rabbit?

Rosemary Well authored and illustrated bunny characters for her classic books about Max and Ruby.  These wonderful characters are brother and sister, Max who is three and Ruby is seven, and how they work out their sibling relationship when encountering problems or differences of opinions.  The stories are designed for pre-schoolers.

In 2002 Max and Ruby hit the big time when Well's signed on with
Nickelodeon and Max and Ruby became animated TV stars.  Read our article about this ascent from children library shelf to big-screen television at Max and Ruby.

House Rabbit's Beginnings

Rabbits were seen primarily as a source of meat until the Victorian Age with its growth of the urban middle class.  Since little contact with nature became the rule, pets were kept and a whole industry grew up around this phenomenon by supplying its needs.

18th century poet, William Cowper, lived with three rabbits he named Puss, Tiney and Bess.  Cowper credited his passionate care of these house rabbits for helping him overcome depression and suicidal tendencies.  He would write glowing letters to his friends  about his artistic observations of and his entertaining interactions with his house companions.

Victorian painters such as George S. Knowles and Sir Edwin Landseer began painting children in loving relationship with their pet rabbits.

And the rest of the story of keeping companion pets is, as they say, history.  (For a history of rabbits go to Rabbit History).

An Age Of Maturity

They say Autumn is the age of maturity.  After 20 years of "constructing" the Mid-South Bunny Museum, we now are very selective of which new items we will add to our collection and where they will be displayed.  New projects get a fast start and then settled down into a routine until they are completed.  Our wish for you is that the Autumn years of your life will be the best, and before you are called away your life will seem complete.
