June 2009 Newsletter

The Longest Day of the Year

June 21st
was the longest day of the year (because of the earth's tilt toward the sun), but the month of June may have seemed like the longest month of the year to the House Rabbit Society's  New Mexico Chapter.  You see, these compassionate bunny-loving volunteers found out about a family that had been rescuing rabbits for the past 12 years, but it had gotten way out of hand.  When some of the rabbits burrowed out of the large backyard and feasted on a neighbor's vegtable garden, Animal Control was notified and over 300 domestic rabbits were found "hopping" around (the law only allowed for five).  The rabbit rescue groups across a multi-state area went into action to save these lovable creatures.  You can read the news story at Albuguergue's TV station's website along with a video of their TV coverage at: KRQE TV website.

To see a list of all the rescue groups and individuals who have helped neuter, cage, doctor, and find homes for these adoptable rabbits see the article (at bottom of the page) at:
www.rabbit.org/newmexico .  This is another great example why you should join us as members of the House Rabbit Society if you have not done so already.

Speaking of Rabbit Rescue Volunteers

This month we would like to feature Caroline, who lives in British Columbia, Canada, and who volunteers every eight weeks to trim the toenails of the rabbits up for adoption at SPCA (usually about 20+ buns each time).  She became the guardian of her first bunny in 1992, and now has 10 rescued house rabbits she personally cares for and adores.

Caroline is also a creative artist who has a line of earrings she has personally designed that can be purchased online.  A portion of the proceeds goes to the Vancover Rabbit and Rescue Advocacy group.  View her jewlry (better yet, buy some)

Two New Articles

We are happy to present two new articles added to our Rabbit World View website.  The first is our review of the new movie available on DVD for children: "My Friend Rabbit"

Our second new article is about the famous 18th century English poet, Willian Cowper, who was a pioneer in the House Rabbit Movement by housing and domesticating three intelligent hares.  Read all about him at:  William Cowper - Famous Rabbit Lover.

A Word About Google Ads

We have Google Ads posted on our website as a way to make a little money to cover our costs.  Each time someone clicks an add we get a penny or two.  We have no control over what ads appear.  We have gotten a few complaints about offensive Google Ads, such as adds for breeders who sell rabbit meat.  Believe us, if we had control of the Google Ads we definitey would not let rabbit meat ads appear on our site.  P.S.  A google is a one followed by 100 zeroes.

The Importance of Language

We have all heard the children's rhyme "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me".  But as adults we know this is not true; words can not only hurt, and they can cloud the meani
ng of what is really being communicated.

Dr. Elliot M. Katz, President of In Defense of Animals, is leading a movement to have legal terminolgy changed concerning the protection of animals so as to be more specific and accurate.  His group is having success in changing the legal term "owner" of animals, as if animals are mere property, to becoming the legal term "guardian" and thus emphasizing one's resposibility to their animal companion.  Read about the successes the Guardian Campaign has had and how you might want to get involved (by at least using the woed "guardian" instead of "owner") at:  Guardian Campaign.

Lots and Lots and Lots of Bunny Items - We mean LOTS!!!

In case you haven't heard of the Pasadena Bunny Museum, it is the largest collection of bunny items in the world, and open to the public for free tours on holidays.  Our last look at their website showed 24,418 bunny items in their one location, the residence in which Candace & Steve live.  We, at the Mid-South Bunny Museum, cannot hold a candle to the quantity of bunny items at the Pasadena Bunny Museum, but our emphasis is on quality and innovation.  See their website at:  Pasadena Bunny Museum.

All Bunny Guardians Fear Gastro-Intestinal Stasis

When our buns have elimination problems it is serious business becasue of their fragile digestive systems.  Ususally it is a hairball problem that can be taken care of with proper medication, but if gastro-intestinal stasis persists it can be deadly, so a rabbit-savvy vet visit is definitely in order.

Humans also have digestive problems.  In fact, the number one over-the-counter medicine purchased is for this condition.  If you have any of these kinds of problems, we would like to suggest you take a look at a natural product we have found to be a real blessing to us.  It is called Dr. Miller's Holy Tea.  Take a look at:  Holy Tea.

Any Bunny-Loving Writers Out There?

We have had
requests by readers of the Rabbit World View newsletters to submit their own articles and stories.  We are very open to this and encourage it.  It is our goal to create a community of bunny rabbit lovers the world over through collaboration.  Send us things bunny related and we will determine if it is "bunny worthy" to make it onto the website.  Poems, stories, pictures, videos, and interesting articles are what we are looking for.   You can reach us at:  Rabbit World View

It is our desire to keep things as light and fun as we can when it comes to our house rabbits (and all pets).  This world is such a stressful place. We have much to learn from our house rabbit friends and how they take things as they come in a seemingly transcendent way.  Until next month,
