December 2009 NewsletterMerry Christmas!!
Joy to the world of pets, especially our rabbit friends. In our rush to get everything ready for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, we might want to take a few minutes to read the House Rabbit Society's article on what to keep in mind in reference to our house rabbits. For instance, balls of holly are a no-no but poinsetta plants are okay. Artifical trees or real pine needles, extra extension cords, wrapped presents, decorations, etc need to be taken into consideration in regard to our pet's safety. Here's the link to the HRS's informative article: HRS Holiday ArticleAlso, the Holiday Season takes many of us away from our homes for days, even weeks at a time. What about the bunny? Vetinarian stayovers can be expensive. The best option is to find a bunny-sitter willing to feed your special friend(s) twice a day and clean the cage every few days. Make sure the sitter has the contact information for your rabbit-savvy Vet in case of an emergency. Train the sitter about your bunny's behavioral patterns such as how they act when getting a special treat to detect if anything might be wrong. Teach the sitter to check the fecal droppings to make sure the little guy is pooping properly and regularly. Most likely everything will be just fine while you are enjoying the holidays (if a reliable bunny-sitter is found) but it is better to be safe than sorry. Frosty The SnowmanFor great family entertainment, be sure to watch "Frosty The Snowman" if it is on in your area this Christmas. We are talking about the 1969 film starring Jimmy Duante as the voice of the narrator. In this classic story, one of the main characters is Hocus Pocus the rabbit. It is Hocus who brings the magic silk hat to Frosty which brings him to life. Hocus is featured all through the cartoon and is the best part as far as we are concerned. The show can be viewed online at: Frosty The Snowman ![]() Copper the Rabbit Rescue Update
We are very pleased to add this follow-up message about our article last month concerning Copper the rabbit who was to be euthanized for biting a worker at the Humane Society in Tacoma, Washington. There was such an outcry from around the world that Copper was released to our friends at the Rabbit Haven. Here is an artilce about Copper at the Rabbit Haven website where you can make tax-deductible contributions: Copper the Rabbit . Breeding Rabbits?
Ever thought you might want to breed your rabbit to see what it is like? Have you dreamed of seeing newly born rabbits with no fur and their eyes shut and how they develop and mature? Well, before you wake up you might want to rethink your dream. Here is a case in point. A couple in Minnesota started breeding their rabbits as a hobby and before long they had over 80, and most were having respiratory problems. They did the sensible thing and abandoned most of them to one of the Animal Humane Society facilities (which already had 40 rabbits awaiting adoption). Here's a link to the story: Breeding Woes Praise again goes to the Minnesota Companion Rabbit Society's for their help in this worthwhile effort. For those who want to contribute go to MCRS's site for details: MCRS Heroes . Just RelaxHey, its Christmas time, so let's lighten things up a bit with a gift item idea. If your house rabbit is anything like the ones we have been blessed to be guardians of, they love to be petted ... and petted ... and petted, until you stop. Here is a DVD by Chandra Beal on how to best massage your rabbit for better health and longer life. See the details, price, and a peak preview video at: Rabbit Massage Speaking Of Massages
At this time of year reindeer get a lot of press coverage. Here is a video under three minutes of a deer who has befriended a rabbit. What is neat to see is the deer giving the rabbit a massage. Both these animals are "wild" and have been captured on film. Enjoy at: Bambi & Thumper
Dazzle & Zazzle We have found cool rabbit items at the Zazzle site. They currently are featuring a poster with the heading "The World Is Your Carrot" with a fun cartoon rabbit. We have added a comment on their webpage that features a picture of David with our Bincy bunny. See it at: Zazzle Poster Deck The Halls
